Schedule

-        Introductions and expectations of the groups (eg, confidentiality and non-judgement) most people are of course already aware of this but we do have to mention it!

-        What do we mean by mental health? Group discussion

-        Exploring mental health and wellbeing? This is an opportunity for the group to think about some of the more common signs and symptoms of low wellbeing, as well as how we might react to and cope with our own low moods.

-        Maximising our own wellbeing and managing stress – we can all take action to improve our own wellbeing through the 5 ways of wellbeing (Connect, Learn, Be Active, Notice, Give) –I’ll be sure to include Nature in this one! We’ll spend some time talking about things we do regularly that make us feel good, and link this in to the 5 ways. This is a really nice opportunity for people to focus on their own wellbeing. I’ll explain that the 5 ways are so effective because they can form a positive thought cycle rather than negative.

Comfort break

-        Wellbeing conversations activity – In the group we’ll look at times when they have had their own wellbeing conversations, and the positive or negative things that affected their own ability to open up. We’ll look at the 4 steps that contribute to a positive conversation which are

Asking open questions

Listening attentively

Empathy and reflecting

Support

Once we’ve discussed this, I’ll put the group into pairs and give them an opportunity to practice. We always suggest picking a positive topic such as the wellbeing activities we’ve already talked about. Then we’ll come back together as a group to talk about what worked well from the above.

-        Further support and resources/signposting – I’ll have my CASS resources, and information about support in the local area. If anyone would like further signposting I’ll be available for them to email and ask any questions.

-        Breathing exercise

-        End of session / time to talk and reflect if people would like to / feedback
